DIY Whirlybird Installation: Step-by-Step Guide for Homeowners

Installing a whirlybird is a great way to improve ventilation in your home, helping to regulate indoor temperature and reduce moisture buildup. While hiring a professional ensures a flawless installation, many handy homeowners can successfully tackle this project themselves. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to install a whirlybird on your roof.

Materials and Tools Needed:

1. Bradford Whirlybird(s)

2. 2 Storey Ladder

3. Measuring tape (For Metal Roofs)

4. Pencil or marker

5. Tin Cutters (For Metal Roofs)

6. Drill

7. Drill Bits - Phillips and Hex Head

8. Utility knife

9. Silicone sealant or roofing sealant

10. Safety gear (gloves, sunglasses, hat, non-slip shoes)

11. Plyers

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Choose the Right Location:

Select an appropriate location on your roof for the whirlybird installation. The ideal spot is near the roof's peak to maximize airflow. Ensure the location is free from obstructions such as chimneys, vents, or satellite dishes. For metal roofs the flashing must be installed under the ridge capping to allow for a waterproof design.

2. Prepare Your Workspace:

Safety first! Wear appropriate safety gear, and ensure your ladder is stable and placed on level ground. Check the weather forecast to avoid working in rain or high winds.

3. Mark the Hole (Metal Roofs) or Choose a the tile to be removed (Tiled Roofs)

For Tin: On the roof, place the flashing for the whirlybird (included in kit) down and mark with your pencil the hole size to match the hole in the flashing pan.

For Tile: On the roof, kick up the surrounding tiles and remove the tile where you would like to install the whirlybird.

4. Cut the Hole (Metal Roof):

Using tin snips, carefully cut along the marked circle to create an opening in the roof. Be cautious of falling debris and sharp edges, this is where gloves come in handy. Use the plyers to turn up the bottom edges of the roof tin to prevent any water ingress. Cut a hole in the sarking of the cavity if required.

5. Install the Flashing:

Position the flashing around the hole to create a watertight seal. For metal roofs, ensure the whirlybird pan is installed under the ridge cap to enhance waterproofing. Secure the flashing with screws.

6. Attach the Whirlybird:

Place the whirlybird over the flashing, aligning it with the hole. Secure the whirlybird to the roof using the screws provided in the kit. Tighten the screws evenly to ensure a secure fit. Align the whilrybird with the angle of the roof.

8. Test the Whirlybird:

Once installed, check the whirlybird to ensure it spins freely and smoothly. Properly installed whirlybirds should rotate with minimal effort, driven by even a light breeze.

9. Final Inspection:

Inspect the installation from the roof and the ground. Ensure there are no gaps, loose screws, or signs of potential leaks.

10. The Exit:

Safely remove yourself from the roof, pack away your tools, grab an iced cold beer and look up at the roof to appreciate the work you done to make your home a better place!
